Wool rugs India buyers ask for by name are prized for one simple reason — wool is the most practical and time-tested fibre in the rug world. For thousands of years it has been hand-spun and woven into carpets across Persia, Central Asia and India, and it remains the benchmark against which every other rug fibre is judged. At Jaipur Carpet Studio our master weavers hand-knot pure wool rugs from premium highland and New Zealand fleece, building floor coverings that look beautiful on day one and still look good decades later.
What makes wool special is the fibre itself. Each strand is naturally crimped and coated in lanolin, giving it springy resilience, built-in stain and water resistance, and a warm, soft hand underfoot. A well-made hand-knotted wool rug shrugs off footfall, resists crushing and releases dirt easily — which is exactly why wool is the fibre of choice for living rooms, bedrooms, dining rooms and busy family spaces.
Wool earns its reputation through chemistry, not marketing. The fibre’s natural crimp lets a wool rug compress under weight and then spring back, so footprints and furniture dents recover instead of becoming permanent. That resilience is why natural wool rugs routinely last 20 to 50 years — far longer than synthetic or viscose alternatives.
Wool is also naturally stain-resistant and flame-retardant. The lanolin coating on each fibre repels liquid long enough for most spills to be blotted away before they soak in, and wool self-extinguishes rather than melting. Day to day, pure wool area rugs need only regular vacuuming and the occasional professional clean; for spills, blot promptly and treat with mild soap and cool water. Our guide to cleaning a wool rug covers the full routine. Wool’s only quirk is light shedding of loose fibres on new rugs, which settles within a few weeks of normal use.
Not all wool is equal, and the grade of fleece decides how a rug wears and how richly it takes colour. We weave principally with highland wool rugs yarn from sheep raised at altitude — a long-staple, high-lanolin fibre that is exceptionally durable and lustrous — and with imported New Zealand wool rugs yarn, prized for its bright, clean white base that holds both pale and saturated dyes beautifully.
Our wool is carded and hand-spun in the traditional way, which keeps the natural variation that gives a handmade rug its depth, then dyed with colourfast, AZO-free and chrome-free dyes that meet US, UK and EU import standards. The yarn is hand-knotted at 100 to 400+ KPSI (knots per square inch) depending on the design — a higher knot count renders finer detail and a denser, longer-lasting pile. For buyers who want extra sheen, we also blend wool with silk highlights in our wool & silk rugs range.
We manufacture wool rugs in every standard international size — 2×3, 3×5, 4×6, 5×8, 6×9, 8×10, 9×12 and 10×14 feet — plus runners, rounds and squares, and custom dimensions up to 14×20 and beyond. The wool area rug 8×10 is our most popular size for US living rooms, but every piece can be made to your exact measurements. Design options span the full catalogue:
Minimum order is a single rug, with better wholesale pricing from 10+ pieces. Custom colours, sizes and designs add no tooling cost — only the loom time.

Whether you need a single signature piece or a full container of wool rugs, you deal directly with the people who make them.
Yes — wool is one of the most hard-wearing natural rug fibres available. Its crimped, lanolin-coated strands spring back from compression, so a quality hand-knotted wool rug easily handles living rooms, hallways and busy family spaces and lasts 20 to 50 years with normal care.
Most of our wool rugs are genuinely hand-knotted, tied knot by knot on the loom by Jaipur artisans at 100 to 400+ KPSI. We also weave hand-loomed and flat-weave wool constructions — just tell us the construction you need.
Vacuum regularly without a hard beater bar, blot spills promptly with cool water and mild soap, and have the rug professionally cleaned every couple of years. Wool’s natural lanolin resists staining, so most spills lift easily when treated quickly.
New wool rugs release a little loose fibre for the first few weeks, which is normal and stops with use. Because we use colourfast AZO-free dyes on premium highland and New Zealand wool, the colours stay rich for decades and resist fading in normal indoor light.
