Hawa Mahal
Palace of the Winds
The 953-windowed crown of Jaipur, rising five storeys in pale rose-pink sandstone.
Commissioned in 1799 by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh, this extraordinary latticework facade - resembling a beehive of the god Krishna's crown - was designed so royal ladies could observe street life while remaining in purdah. The pink sandstone façade, which gives Jaipur its famous sobriquet, glows like a ember at dusk and blazes gold at sunrise. Every carved alcove, every jharokha window is a masterclass in Rajput stonecraft - the same meticulous geometry and love of pattern that you will find woven into every authentic carpet from our karkhana.
